Run and Hide: Pankaj Mishra with Jennifer Egan and Anderson Tepper

BPL's March International Writers series features Pankaj Mishra, author of Run and Hide, with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Jennifer Egan, as they discuss Mishra’s novel with Anderson Tepper.

One of the most important public intellectuals of our time, Pankaj Mishra’s new novel—his first in twenty years—is cause for major celebration. Run and Hide is a vivid and moving meditation on the rise of New India, the effects of globalization, and the cult of success, moving from the backwaters and big cities of India to the salons of New York and London. It is also about the difficulties of outrunning one’s history and the persistent divisions of class and gender. “Pankaj Mishra transforms a visceral, intimate story of one man’s humble origins into a kaleidoscopic portrait of a society bedazzled by power and wealth—what it means on a human level, and what it costs,” says Jennifer Egan. “Run and Hide is a spectacular, illuminating work of fiction.”

Pankaj Mishra is the author of The Romantics, which won the Art Seidenbaum Award; Bland Fanatics; Age of Anger; and From the Ruins of Empire. He contributes political and literary essays to The Guardian, the London Review of Books, The New York Review of Books, and The New Yorker. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, he lives in London and India. His most recent book is the novel Run and Hide.

Jennifer Egan is the author of six previous books of fiction: Manhattan Beach, winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction; A Visit from the Goon Squad, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award; The Keep; the story collection Emerald City; Look at Me, a National Book Award finalist; and The Invisible Circus. Her new novel, The Candy House, is coming out in April from Scribner.

Anderson Tepper is co-chair of the International Committee of the Brooklyn Book Festival and has written for The New York Times Book Review, Vanity Fair, World Literature Today, and Words without Borders, among other publications.
