Getting your high school diploma is one of the best things you can do for yourself and one of the most important ways to further your career.

Brooklyn Public Library's High School Equivalency Program (HSE) has helped thousands achieve their educational and professional dreams. We help participants prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) test. The GED is a general education diploma equivalent to a high school diploma.

What We Do: In classes with professional teachers and a vigorous curriculum, we focus on improving reading, writing, math and critical thinking skills.  This part-time program for adults 17 years and older encourages students to work with their classmates, creating a supportive system and friendships that will continue after their coursework are completed.

Time Commitment:  Classes meet one or more days per week for a total of 6 hours. Evening, daytime, and weekend schedules are available.

Fast Track Classes - If you need to brush up on your skills before you take the GED exam, enroll in one of our Fast Track classes. Classes meet once a week for those who need to take one or two subjects on the GED.

Class Schedules:

Option 1: Monday/Wednesday 10AM-1PM - Central Library

Option 2: Saturdays 10AM-4PM - Pacific Library

High School Equivalency (HSE) Classes - If you need to improve your reading/writing and math skills to earn your HSE diploma, we are here to assist you. Classes meet twice a week at an Adult Learning Center near you.

Interested? Here's what to do next

You must register in person to enroll in a class. Our registration events happen 3 times per year: Fall: August/September, Winter: January and Spring: March/April. Registration sessions and classes are held at a number of library locations, check our Events Calendar to see when the next registration cycle starts. Remember that you will stay for at least 3 hours, but then you will be placed right away.

17 year-olds must bring their High School discharge papers to registration and proof of age.

At your registration session, you will be assigned your class location based on your educational experience and what classes are available. You can attend registration at any scheduled location even if that is not where you want to attend classes. Try to attend the earliest registration date possible—classes at certain locations fill up quickly! At your registration session, you will be given options for class locations based on your level.

All you need to bring is a pen and prepare to be with us for 3-4 hours. At registration we’ll need you to take an assessment so we can figure out what program is best for you. At the end of your registration session, you will be given options for class locations based on your level.

  • Learning Express Library: Test prep material and practice exams for the GED exams. (An unexpired library barcode and PIN is required for access.)
  • World Education Service:  Check to see how your current education experience from your home country compares to U.S.  university or college admissions requirements and / or professional licensing.

This project is supported by generous grants from the New York State Education Department, Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Services.
